Chasing Dreams: Trusting the Process in a Tough Sport
It’s hard to put into words what it feels like to achieve a lifelong goal. And then, just as you reach it, the inevitable question creeps in: What’s next? Do I keep pushing to go bigger and farther, or do I step back and focus on coaching the next generation?
My Beginning: From Lessons to Endurance
I started riding when I was five — a lesson kid through and through. By age sixteen, I found myself drawn to endurance riding, learning the horsemanship and patience it takes to compete at that level. But deep down, I always loved jumping too.
The Big Moment: Debuting at FEI 2*
Fast forward twenty years, and here I am, a month past my debut at the FEI 2* level with my incredible partner, Fernhill Opulence.
The Reality: The Cost of Chasing Dreams
Eventing—and equestrian sports in general—are ungodly expensive. As my boyfriend likes to say, they’re way too delicate to be considered an investment. Chasing these dreams can seem like folly, especially when you’re spending money at this rate.
I didn’t come to this sport with a silver spoon. Every step I’ve taken has involved fundraisers, hard work, long hours, budgeting, scraping, and saving. I won’t pretend this sport is easy or cheap, but if you’re willing to work hard, get creative, and have a little luck with supportive people in your corner, it’s absolutely doable.
The Power of a Village
The most important part of my journey has been building a village—a community of people who genuinely want to see me succeed. Among them are my best friend and fellow coach Anna, my facility owner Lynn, who always says “yes” to my wild ideas, and friends who have become family. But more than anything, I’ve believed in myself. Even in the darkest moments, I clung to that sliver of hope.
What It’s All Worth
Looking back now, I know it was all worth it. The relationship I’ve built with my horse, Horacio is without question the greatest triumph of my life.
Dreams Are Possible
When I was younger, I dreamed of the Olympics. I quickly realized those dreams are rare and far between. So, I shifted my goals to something more attainable—but even then, it sometimes felt impossible. And yet, it happened.
If there’s one message I want to share, it’s this: trust the process. Trust yourself, trust your trainer, and work your ass off. Anything is possible. I am living proof—a kid from suburban America who just loves horses and believed she could do incredible things someday.
Financial Realities & Making It Work
Now, as a coach living in one of the most expensive places in the country, I won’t lie: having financial resources helps chase these dreams. But it’s still possible without them. I have families in my program who make it work no matter what. They show up, work hard, trade, sacrifice—and together, we move mountains to make their goals attainable.
Eventing is a challenging sport. It’s expensive, delicate, and demanding. But if you’re willing to fight for your dreams, surround yourself with the right people, and believe in yourself, it’s a journey worth taking.
Closing Thought
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” — Eleanor Roosevelt
A Note From Me
Sharing my journey isn’t easy, but if it inspires even one person to trust the process and keep pushing toward their goals, it’s worth it.
